February provided another opportunity for the PGS team to support customers across a wide range of heating systems. While breakdown response remains an important part of what we do, the month also highlighted the value of preventative maintenance, regular servicing, and system inspections in identifying problems before they become costly failures.
Across commercial plant rooms, heating systems, and specialist burner equipment, our engineers were busy helping customers maintain reliability, improve efficiency, and extend the lifespan of critical assets.
Preventing Small Problems from Becoming Major Failures
One of the standout jobs this month involved engineers Mike and Kellan repairing underground steel pipework that had suffered significant corrosion over time. The leaking sections were carefully removed, existing fittings were reconditioned where possible, and new pipework was installed to restore the system.
Corrosion related failures like this are a good example of why regular inspections are so important. Identifying deterioration early can often prevent emergency repairs, water damage, and unplanned downtime.
A similar situation arose when we attended a leaking pump valve. Further investigation revealed that water ingress was beginning to threaten the pump itself, meaning a relatively minor leak could have resulted in the loss of a much more expensive piece of equipment. Thankfully the issue was identified and repaired before any significant damage occurred.
Maintenance, Water Quality and System Performance
A key focus throughout February was maintaining system efficiency through servicing, cleaning, and inspection work. The team completed commercial boiler servicing, strip and cleans on multiple boilers, heat exchanger cleaning, oil burner maintenance, and an oil service at DX Leighton.
Many heating system issues can be traced back to poor water quality, contamination, sludge build up, or lack of routine maintenance. This is why PGS places such importance on inspections, servicing, and water quality testing. Understanding the condition of a system allows potential issues to be identified before they lead to breakdowns, reduced efficiency, or costly component failures.
Several of the systems attended this month showed clear signs of contamination and fouling, reinforcing the importance of preventative maintenance in keeping plant operating reliably throughout the heating season.
Finding Hidden Faults
Not every fault is immediately obvious, and February presented a number of examples where thorough investigation was required to identify the root cause of a problem.
One particularly interesting job involved a leaking heat exchanger where the source of the leak was initially concealed. Water was escaping through the condensate pipework, masking the true fault and making diagnosis more challenging. Once the issue was identified, the necessary repairs could be planned and carried out correctly.
Our team also replaced a Worcester Ri top connector and an air source heat pump pressure relief valve, ensuring both systems could continue operating safely and efficiently.
Specialist Burner and Boiler Expertise
Specialist burner work remained a significant part of the month’s activities. One burner package was found to be leaking fumes due to faulty gaskets combined with previous installation issues. Following a detailed inspection, the defects were rectified, new components installed where required, and the burner returned to safe operation.
Alongside this, oil burner cleaning and maintenance work formed part of our ongoing support for customers who rely on specialist combustion equipment. Regular burner servicing not only improves efficiency but also helps ensure safe and reliable performance throughout the year.
February Summary
February highlighted the importance of looking beyond reactive repairs and focusing on the long term health of heating systems. While breakdowns will always occur, many of the issues encountered this month could be linked to wear, corrosion, contamination, or components that had deteriorated gradually over time.
Through servicing, inspections, water quality assessments, and preventative maintenance, PGS helps customers identify these issues early and reduce the likelihood of unexpected failures. Whether responding to a fault, maintaining a commercial plant room, or carrying out specialist burner work, the objective remains the same: keeping systems operating safely, efficiently, and reliably throughout the year.
